The Great Green Exodus: Mr Green Casino Preps To Exit the UK

Mr Green Casino Exit UK

Mr Green Casino, one of the fastest withdrawal casinos in the UK licensed by the Gambling Commission and dubbed the ‘gentleman of online casino operators,' is all set to exit the United Kingdom market.

In an email communication, the operator stated, “After careful consideration, we have made the strategic decision to realign our focus and refine our business operations by discontinuing Mr Green UK.

The effective date for the closure is set for April 2, 2024.

This decision follows the earlier closure of its UK-facing sportsbook in 2022 due to financial losses. Before the closure, players were notified about the decision and provided with details regarding their pending bets.

They were also offered a 48-hour window between September 6th and 8th to access the sportsbook, review their bet history, and settle any pending bets.

Wagering was not permitted during this period, and previous bets were scheduled for settlement instead of cancellation. Winnings were assured to be auto-credited to player accounts, with no withdrawal restrictions.

Mr Green Casino had further encouraged its customers to get in touch via live chat support for any queries regarding the planned and inevitable shutdown of its operations in the UK. However, a promise was made to keep its online casino going.

We expect the operator to have similar plans for its UK casino players, as well.

The decision to completely withdraw from the UK market might not come as a surprise, given the regulatory challenges faced by the operators. Something similar had happened when Mr Green had decided to withdraw its sportsbook from Germany in 2020.

This was at a time when several other popular gambling businesses were closing shop in Germany due to the country’s strict local regulatory regime. Among the top brands was Unibet from Kindred Group.

Perhaps the UK market turned out to be the same for the operator. Before the shutdown of the sportsbook in the UK, Itai Pazner, the then CEO of 888 Holdings, the parent company of Mr Green, had hinted at a strategic shift towards more promising assets while not explicitly mentioning the brand

The announcement of Mr Green’s sportsbook being taken down had immediately followed so it was easy to understand which deadweight was being removed from the parent company. It is to be noted that the platform has repeatedly experienced regulatory issues in several instances in various jurisdictions over the years.

In 2018, the operator had incurred a fine of €312,500 in the Netherlands issued by the Dutch Gaming Authority for providing specific gambling services without the requisite operational authorization. Mr Green tried to appeal the fine by citing an ‘accident,’ but eventually failed.

Likewise, in 2021, the Swedish Spelinspektionen had issued two separate warnings and penalty fees amounting to SEK31.5 million regarding the operator’s KYC, AML, and responsible gambling failures. Mr Green eventually failed in its appeal over Swedish sanctions.

Mr Green was even slapped with a £3 million fine by the UKGC in 2019 for systemically failing to protect gambling addicts. The operator was among nine other businesses to face action as part of the regulator’s probe.
